Year One: Our Agave Ranch Journey

It’s that time of the year that we wanted to share the latest updates on how our hijuelos - baby agave plants - are doing. We planted them over a year ago now and we have seen much progress on those little guys.

When we first started off on this new adventure of dabbling in farming we wanted to select a product that we could nurture and see grow over years. We were in no hurry to tend to a crop that needed constant attention and maintenance so we opted for the Blue Agave, also known as the Agave Tequilana, as the crop of choice.

Just to take a quick step back, I originally wanted to grow and cultivate Lavender plants. I had envisioned a glorious sea of lavender plants propping up as far as the eye could see as I galloped on a horse through the pathways. I mean, who wouldn’t want to gaze at the picture below? Stunning right?

But then I realized there was more risk for the plants survival if I was to tend to them. So, Socrates and I compromised and decided on the equally beautiful, yet much more prickly, Blue Agave.

The little guys have definitely been finding their groundings and we’re careful to observe whether or not there are any kind of infestation that requires them to looked after and cared for. To say that Year One was an easy feat would be a gross exaggeration. It was quite simply prickly.

Check out the gradual changes of our little guys below!
